Cotter seniors advance in MSHSL Triple A

Jane Koll and Bryant Gernes have moved on to the section level of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) AAA competition.

AAA recognizes students who excel in academics, arts, and athletics.  Each MSHSL member school nominates one boy and one girl and there is a sub-section, section, and state level competition, with winners being announced at a formal ceremony at the state basketball tournament in Minneapolis in March.

“it’s a very impressive accomplishment, it shows that their hard work and dedication have paid off,” said Cotter co-principal Mary Eileen Fitch.

“Both are strong students who always represent Cotter really well,” added Mr Forney, Cotter’s other co-principal.

The seniors received the news from Sr. Judy in person.

“Bryant and I were both called down to Sr. Judy’s office one day where we were informed that we were selected as Cotter’s AAA award winners,” Koll  said.

“I love being involved in so many activities because it keeps me busy and ultimately, active. A major benefit is that I get to be a part of so many groups and teams within the school. I have my soccer family and school musical family, marching band buddies, basketball team and so much more. Being so involved has allowed me to expand my range of friendships throughout the school as I have learned to form stronger relationships with both my peers and classmates and teachers, coaches and mentors.”

“The toughest thing about being an athlete, musician, and scholar is learning how to manage your time well. You’ve got to find the right balance between all of your activities so that you can find success in each area while also maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The most rewarding part about being so involved is that you always have something to do or somewhere to go. Yes, it does get crazy busy sometimes but the game nights and musical performanc”es, choir concerts and good test grades make up for it all,” Koll added.

“My advice for younger students would be to get involved! Join activities you are interested in and have a blast. Make new friends and stay organized.. And most importantly, go to bed! Trust me, you will wish you slept more when you had the chance.”
