Corn, a Welp, a Foam Roll and more: The Race for Homecoming King
The Cotter Homecoming court was revealed on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, and the school was buzzing.
An estimated 350 voters packed into the St. Cecelia Theatre during two separate sessions. Seniors Jason “JJ” Corn, Sebastian Welp, Jonah Spiten, Jake “Cake” Renk, and Ruohong Guan were selected for King candidates. Mikala Nelton, Beth Parlin, Kirsten Weifenbach, SunAh (Victoria) Shim and Bailey Hansen were nominated to represent the females. Although things seem to be peaceful on the Queen’s side, the male nominees are getting competitive.
Phil the Foam Roll, who has made numerous appearances touring the school to garner support, ran as an independent, but failed to be elected. However, Phil is expected to take away the other candidates’ votes.
“Phil is my guy. I believe in his phil-
osophies,” said junior Henry Reilly.
“Phil has what it takes to be king,” stated junior Ryan Ortega with confidence.
The polls seem pretty even on both sides, with the male candidates all being within five points of each other (excluding Phil, who has so far received 2% of votes). As of 11:09 this morning, Guan leads with 21%.
“Jake Renk has my support,” said senior football captain Alex “Wally” Walechka. “[JJ] would also be a great fit.”
“I really don’t care,” added a studious Andy Tofstad, his eyeball aimed on a microscope.
“Sebastian is a funny guy. I think he’s got my vote,” mentioned a sleepy Yeoung-uk Shin. After his comments, Shin went back to physics class to discover what color the white horse was.
Candidate Jonah Spiten pledged his support to Corn’s campaign.
“I’m not expecting to win. I’m sure JJ will take the gold.”
Corn led all candidates in advertising, spending close to 6 sheets per printer on beautifully photo-shopped fliers.
“I voted for JJ,” said current Ms. Goodview Zoey Aune.
Final votes are expected to be tallied by the end of Friday, with results to be revealed at Cotter’s Pep Fest on Oct. 5.
