When school resumes in the fall students have many things on their minds, but one of the most important is “what’s for lunch?”
Will kids get a healthy nourishing meal to get them through the day? Do they like lunch? Are they going to be able to eat a school lunch that is healthy and tastes good, or are they going to have to pack their own lunch every day?
The State of Minnesota sponsored lunch program that Cotter receives has been a topic of conversation in the halls ever since it was launched two years ago. People have very different opinions on the food we eat each day.
The first topic that has become a problem recently is the lunch line; “I’m just sick of all the freshmen and dorm students cutting the line,” stated Jacob. With only two lanes and three grades of kids to feed, the lunch line is almost always hectic and packed with lots of students getting sick of it. Another problem that is very controversial is the portion size. Jacob claims that “It is a lot better than last year,” while Elle complains that “I only got ten noodles with my chicken alfredo last week, and then they ran out and used rice.” On the bright side for the Minnesota lunch program is that both Jacob and Elle both agreed that the lunch menu had some really good items on it, such as nachos and pizza.
The Lunchroom employee stated a few important opinions about serving lunch from his perspective. He stated he had been working there for about three weeks but enjoys doing it and sees smiles on all the kid’s faces. He loves what he does and says the lunches don’t seem too bad for a free lunch. His only complaint is that he does wish that the smaller kids would be better at picking up after themselves.
