Cade Cummings had an electric start to the football season, but after suffering an injury in the second game he is now focused on bouncing back.
Cade, a junior, is a running back and middle linebacker. In the season opener against La Crescent, he scored a 76-yard rushing touchdown, igniting the Rambler offense. Cummings has speed, power, and the ability to make tacklers miss. He is a key member of Cotter’s improved rushing attack, which has also featured quarterback Dane Guzzo, and running backs Isaac Meinke and Logan Hicks.
Unfortunately, he injured his MCL on the first play of the second game at Kenyon-Wanamingo, but he’s staying positive and is determined to get back on the field. Coaches and teammates say his work ethic, leadership, and skills make him a key part of the team this season.
“ I felt good about the first game,” Cade said. “I produced a lot for the team and made an impact. Unfortunately, in the second game, I injured my MCL on the first play.”
“My favorite play was the long touchdown against La Crescent in week one,” he added. Cade sees the growth of the whole offense. “Blocks have gotten better and everyone is understanding their assignments better.” His goals for the season are to “fully recover my MCL, get more touchdowns, and more yards, more wins.”
“It’s a bummer — he works hard and is a good athlete for us. Hopefully, he’ll get back as soon as possible, but he has to rest. He’s physical, he runs harder, tackles better, and he’s a leader on both sides of the ball,” said Cotter head coach Kyler Sieben.
His teammates also value Cummings’s contributions to the team. “On the field he’s always working. He’s a great leader and all-around player. He makes great plays, knows his job, and keeps the team up with a positive attitude. Injuries can be tricky, but he’ll do fine if he takes his recovery seriously. He stands out this season because he’s going into junior year after a big sophomore jump and fits perfectly with our offense,” Brennan Repinski said.
Even with the early injury, Cade is staying positive and ready to help the team for the rest of the season until he gets back. The Ramblers are 3-0 heading into this week’s matchup where they travel to take on the undefeated Pine Island Panthers.
