Cotter has announced its newest National Honor Society (NHS) members.

Tim DeMarais, Brennan Schaffner, Tyler Suman, Alex Walechka, and Morgan Whyte are the newest tenth grade members, and Cora Arnold, Zach Bailey, Claire Brendel, Kate Duellman, Alissa Marek-Spartz, Maura Michener, Jacob Modjeski, Suhwan (Mathew) Park, Kyle Schneider, Brynn Spitzer, and Kaylin Zukowski are the newest eleventh grade members.  As part of the NHS, this group will take on new responsibilities.

The National Honor Society is an organization that is known world wide.  Founded in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), it still thrives today in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, as well as in Canada.

This year alone, the society took on projects like putting up Homecoming, Halloween, and Christmas decorations, the Winona Health Auxiliary festival of trees, the Winona Volunteer Services- Food Shelf, candy grams for Christmas, Catholic Schools week bingo, Penny Wars for Red Cross disaster relief, Cotter Auction, and helping welcome the Okinawa, Japan students.

What do these students have that makes them eligible to take on such responsibilities?  Well, to start, they have a GPA of at 3.5 and are either a sophomore or junior.  A committee of five faculty members go through each application and essay to determine who’s best suited to the tasks set before them.  With the new and current NHS members, the society will continue to make Cotter a fun place to learn as well as help the community.
