Some people just know how to put the ball in the basket, and Gabby Bowlin is one of those people.

Bowlin, a standout sophomore guard, went 6 of 7 from 3 point range and 12 of 16 overall, leading the Ramblers to a 64-47 victory over Braham in their final game of 2014 at a holiday tournament in St. Cloud.

Gabby’s 35 points tied a 20 year old school record set by Mary Baisley in 1994.

“I suggested to her the night before the Braham game that she should look to drive to the basket more. I am glad she didn’t follow my advice,” said head coach Pat Bowlin.“It was the best shooting performance I have ever witnessed by a Cotter girls basketball player.”

The school record is not the only thing Gabby is excited about, “It is definitely a better feeling to break the family record. It is very common for that topic to come up at family gatherings, so I’m excited to finally be the one who is at the top of the list. Although I beat the kid’s record, I didn’t beat my dad’s which is 37 points, that is my next goal.”

“She definitely earned it and worked hard for it,” said teammate Mikala Nelton, “being a part of the team when it happened was a lot of fun.”

What enables Gabby to score at this high clip is her passion for the game.

“You can ask anyone and they will be able to tell you how much passion she has for the team because it shows on and off the court. She truly cares about basketball,” stated Nelton, “without her, our will to win and compete wouldn’t be as strong.”

Gabby has two and a half years remaining to break her newly tied record. Pat Bowlin isn’t ruling the possibility out, ”You never know in basketball, but a 35 point game is very rare. Being only a sophomore there is always the possibility, but it would take another special night on the court.” Getting Gabby the ball will continue to be a priority for the Ramblers as the advance toward the postseason. “The entire team is playing better with her improved scoring and to beat the good teams we need her to look for her offense,” said Pat Bowlin.

Gabby Bowlin and the rest of the Ramblers are in action Friday, January 16 at home against Wabasha-Kellogg.
